In 2014 the UK Government announced its intention to establish a horizontal spaceport in the UK and identified Prestwick as one of 8 sites it was considering for selection against a detailed requirements specification. The airport had recently transitioned to Government ownership and did not have the internal capacity or skills required to engage in the competitive process.
With imminent response deadlines looming Prestwick Spaceport Consortium was quickly established and was contracted by the Airport and South Ayrshire Council to lead the airport’s engagement in the competitive process. Conducting in depth market research amongst the already well-developed US spaceport industry, implementing a concerted communication, conference attendance and promotion campaign through 2015 and developing a wide relationship set amongst the UK Space industry, the project rapidly established Prestwick’s credentials as the leading site amongst those in the competition across the range of criteria.
On completion the Prestwick Spaceport Consortium was transferred to the airport and a permanent campaign team established. The project exemplifies CN&S's ability to approach a new technical area and quickly master, formulate and act in capturing a passing window of opportunity. CN&S maintains a close relationship with the programme.
